Avantgarde film pioneer, dancer, photographer and theoretician Maya Deren began to shoot films at the start of the 40s. Outside of traditional ideas of time and space, she created subjective film realities, linked together film, dance, ritual and choreography and experimented with animation techniques and creating shifting moods via contrasts in brightness. The short film programme includes the titles MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON (USA 1943), AT LAND (USA 1944), A STUDY IN CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CAMERA (USA 1945), RITUAL IN TRANSFIGURED TIME (USA 1946) and THE VERY EYE OF NIGHT (USA 1958).
